Beyond the thing

“Da erkennt man nicht was es ist”. “Da is ja nix scharf”.

Dabei geht so viel Wundersames verloren.

English abstract:
“Can’t identify nothing here”. “Dude, nothing is in focus!”. “Enyone could take this photograph”. Many viewers of this kind of pictures will probably think alike, especially if they are photographers themself. Well, yes, yes and yes. Yes, there is no object clearly identifiable in this shot: The photo does not want to document any objects. Yes, there is nothing sharp in this shot and I did so deliberately. Yes, anyone can take this kind of photographs and I think this is sweet.

I’m not competing with my photography, I am searching. Im searching for a world beyond the label that we so quickly glue to identifiable objects. I don’t understand the world as a state that can be objectively documented just by means of excellent sharpness. I understand the world as a process, a interaction between things. In the middle of the night, being captivated by light, color and meaningless form, the question what it was is of no importance to me. Only the quality of the attraction is what I am interested in. Who cares if this is a walmart store, a brothel or a gas station… it is the momentum of perpetual attraction.

It’s similar to trying to look behind a mask. It’s not the surface that I am interested in here. It’s the quality behind the mask. This kind of photography is like falling in love: I begin to see qualities that lie well beyond the surface.

Yours truly
