Da hängt es über dem Geländer.
Von fern ein Badetuch.
Von nah 2341 unvergleichliche Knoten
unter meiner Hand.

Die Welt schreit Namen.
Ich schreie mit.

soll kein Name mein Mass bestimmen.

There it hangs over the railing.
From far away, a bath towel.
Up close, 2,341 individual knots
beneath my hand.
Stay more than the word that defines you.

to the eye that keeps its distance.
Go far enough, and I grow simple.
Come close, and I grow more.
Call me bath towel.
Trust the word – but not too far.
I am a distress flag on a deserted island.
A sling for a newborn.
I am a sail for a vessel not yet made.
Not one knot need change.
Stay more than the word that defines you.

The world cries names.
I cry with it.
Names, names –
and none can measure a human life.
Too long I believed
I must weave myself anew.
The cloth is dry.
I lay it into folds.
When next it opens,
no name shall set my measure.
