Was passiert, wenn man versehentlich das Unwichtige nicht ignoriert?
Man erzählt sich, dass die Wunder eines Tages traurig wurden.
Die Menschen sahen sie kaum noch. Denn sie suchten nur noch dort,
wo alles groß, laut und außergewöhnlich war.
Immer öfter verwechselten sie das Schrille und Spektakuläre
mit dem Wunderbaren.
Die kleinen und großen Wunder sahen, wie die Menschen
immer ernster wurden, immer eiliger und immer ärmer an Staunen.
Da beschlossen sie, den Menschen das Staunen zurückzuschenken.
Seitdem lächeln sie uns besonders strahlend
aus den alltäglichsten Dingen entgegen.
Sie warten hoffnungsvoll auf den einen Blick,
der ihr Lächeln erwidert.
Vor ein paar Tagen saß ich im Café. Vor mir ein dunkler Espresso, wie bestellt. In der Hand eine Zeitung. Daneben ein ordinäres Glas Wasser – nicht bestellt und ehrlich gesagt auch nie sonderlich beliebt bei mir.
Meine Aufmerksamkeit galt den Wichtigkeiten der Welt. In der Zeitung: Drama, Leid und Komplikationen, gedruckt in großen und kleinen Lettern. Schwarz auf Weiß. Eine seltsame Schwere setzte sich zwischen meine Schulterblätter. Mir schien, als hätte sich eine Wolke vor die Sonne geschoben.
Bis sich plötzlich ein Farbklecks in mein Blickfeld schmuggelte.
Eigentlich wusste ich sofort, was es war.
Ein Wasserglas.
Erkannt.
Einsortiert.
Unbewusst bewertet.
Banal.
Nicht einmal bestellt.
Das Beigemüse zum Kaffee.
Dann aber lächelte es mich an. Und mein Blick blieb hängen.
Nein. Er begann mit dem Glas zu tanzen.
Mit dem Blau.
Dem Gold.
Den fließenden Schichten.
Den sanften Formen.
Ich hatte eines der Wunder entdeckt!
Eine ganze Weile lächelten das Glas und ich uns einfach an.
So lange, bis die Servierfachfrau stehen blieb, uns beide ansah und mit einem leicht besorgten Lächeln fragte:
„Ist alles in Ordnung mit dem Wasser?“
Ich zeigte auf das Glas.
„Ja“, sagte ich. „Ich glaube, ich habe soeben ein Wunder entdeckt.“
Jetzt lächeln drei.

There is an old tale that wonders once grew sad.
People hardly noticed them anymore. They had begun searching only where everything was grand, loud, and extraordinary. More and more often, they mistook the spectacular for the miraculous.
The great wonders and the small ones watched as people became ever more serious, ever more hurried, and ever less capable of wonder. And so they decided to give people back their sense of wonder.
Since then, they have smiled at us more brightly from within the most ordinary of things.
And there they wait, full of quiet hope, for the one gaze that smiles back.
A few days ago, I was sitting in a café.
In front of me, an espresso—exactly as ordered. A newspaper in my hands. Beside it, an ordinary glass of water. I hadn’t ordered it, and to be honest, I had never paid it much attention.
My mind was occupied with the important things. The newspaper was full of drama, suffering, and complications, printed in headlines large and small. Black on white. I could feel a quiet heaviness settling between my shoulders, as though a cloud had drifted across the sun.
Then, out of nowhere, a splash of color slipped into the corner of my eye.
I knew instantly what it was: a glass of water.
Recognized.
Categorized.
Silently judged.
Ordinary. Unasked for. Just the side dish that comes with the coffee.
And then it smiled at me.
My gaze lingered. No… It began to dance with the glass.
With the blue.
The gold.
The flowing layers.
The gentle curves.
I had just stumbled upon one of the wonders!
For quite a while, the glass and I simply smiled at one another.
Until the waitress stopped, looked from the glass to me with a hint of concern, and asked,
“Is everything alright with your water?”
I pointed at the glass.
“Yes,” I said. “I think I’ve just discovered a miracle.”
Now three of us are smiling.
