Zuerst die Pasta, dann das Universum
Wie eine Katze in einer Kiste uns zu der Frage brachte, zu welcher Wirklichkeit Gott gehören würde
Wir hatten sieben Gabeln mehr als genug Pasta gegessen. Beide wurden wir von den Kohlenhydraten an den Tisch gebunden und so gab es keinen Ausweg: Mein Sohn protestierte lautstark, dass der Schrödinger für seine Experimente Katzen genutzt habe. Die verbale Intensität seiner Abscheu liess die letzten Reste Sugo all’arrabbiata aus seinen Mundwinkeln spritzen.
Es ist für mich etwas vom Herzerwärmendsten, mit meinem 13-jährigen Sohn am Familientisch sitzend über Quantenmechanik zu diskutieren. Oder über Flughörnchen als biologische Alternative zu SMS. Aber diese Skizze liegt auf einem anderen Zettel.
Nun, kurz vor dem Nachtessen hatten wir eine Diskussion über die Unschärfe der Schulnoten als Messung der intellektuellen Leistung. Er meinte: “Wenn die Frage schlecht gestellt ist, könne die Antwort ja auch nicht besser werden“.
Da die Argumente schnell zahlreich und verwinkelt wurden, nutzte ich einen herumliegenden Zettel als Notizpapier. Nicht, um das Gespräch zu ordnen. Eher, um mit einem Zettel und ein paar Fragen nicht ganz aus der Kurve zu fliegen. Und um meinen Sohn immer wieder zu ermutigen, seine Gedanken nicht nur zu sagen, sondern zu skizzieren. So hielten wir recht skizzenhaft das Ausgangsproblem der euklidischen Geometrie fest. Und dass eine Treppe mit unendlich vielen Stufen einer Hypotenuse zwar ähnelt, aber ihre Länge nie identisch werden wird. Schon da war eigentlich alles auf dem Tisch: Messen, Annähern, Verfehlen, Wirklichkeit.
Bevor wir das Thema abschliessen konnten, war der Hunger zu gross geworden – daher gingen wir zum Kochen über. Die Sache mit den sieben Gabeln zu viel habe ich ja schon erzählt.
Nun also hatte der Fragegenerator im Hirn meines Jungen wieder Energie und die Unschärfe der Notengebung führte in seinem Kopf offenbar direkt zu Fragen über Herrn Schrödingers Ethik und Moral im Zusammenhang mit seinem Katzenversuch. Also klärten wir, soweit ich dazu überhaupt in der Lage bin, dass das bemängelte Experiment einzig ein Gedankenexperiment zur Quantenmechanik gewesen sei. Keine Katze wurde in einer Box durch einen quantenmechanisch ausgelösten Giftmechanismus umgebracht. Das trug ein Stück weit zur Deeskalation bei.
Wenn aber schon Ethik und Moral über den leeren Tellern schwebt, dann ist eine Frage nicht weit und mit meinem Jungen und seinem ausgeprägten Bedürfnis nach Gerechtigkeit war es ein Katzensprung bis diese Frage im Raum leuchtete: “Wer definiert denn, was gute Moral ist?”
Zum Glück ist das keine Frage, die man als Vater beantworten muss. Ich hätte trotz sichtbarer Anstrengung wohl keine gute Note erhalten. Aber zwei Fragen konnte ich beisteuern:
Wer legt moralische Regeln fest?
Was macht eine moralische Regel tatsächlich richtig?
Weitere energische Kritzeleien später waren wir uns soweit einig: Niemand kann Moral einfach dadurch wahr machen, dass er sie definiert. Die eigentliche Frage ist, aus welchen Gründen etwas gut, gerecht oder falsch ist.
Ich fühlte den nächsten Fragenkomplex in meinem Sohn förmlich hochbrodeln: „Warum kann irgendein Gott die richtige Moral definieren? Vielleicht sind andere Götter nämlich anderer Meinung!“
Der Zettel ist voller Abzweigungen, halber Kästchen und angefangener Nebenwelten. Ich versuche hier nur, ein paar der Spuren zu beleuchten, die noch lesbar genug sind.
Mein Sohn monierte: “Wenn Gott allwissend und gütig ist, dann bleibt die Frage nach dem Guten und Wohlwollenden in einem Hirntumor eines Neugeborenen. Und komm mir nicht mit die Wege seien unergründlich. Sonst sage ich das beim nächsten Test der Lehrerin auch”.
Sehr spannend wurde es dann, als die Adjektive “allwissend und allmächtig” fielen. Die Frage war schnell: “Könnte ein allmächtiger Gott dann auch gegen die physikalischen Gesetze verstossen? Und wenn ja, warum gelten die Gesetze dann nicht für alle?“
“Und wenn er Materie wäre, dann müsste er auch aus Sternenstaub entstanden sein. Wer hätte dann die erste Sonne gemacht?” So streiften wir Einsteins berühmte Gleichung “E = mc²”. Masse und Energie sind untrennbar verknüpft, Materie und Masse aber nicht einfach dasselbe. Jedenfalls nicht sauber genug, um daraus einen substanziellen alten Mann mit Bart zu bauen.
Und von da war es nur ein Quantensprung, um auch gleich noch das Doppelspalt-Experiment kurz zu streifen. Zwischen Pasta-Wellen und Parmesan-Krümeln lag plötzlich auch noch der Welle-Teilchen-Dualismus auf dem Tisch.
Mein Sohn schlussfolgerte: “Ich hätte alle Resultate perfekt in mir – wenn man aufhören würde sie von aussen zu beobachten!”
“Aber”, kam dann doch der finale Einwurf in der Sache Energie: “was war denn nun vor dem Big Bang wirklich?” Und völlig korrekt während dem Versuch mögliche Antworten zu gewichten: “und was ist das genau, da wo das Universum hinein expandiert. Und seit wann gibt es das Nichts? Und wenn es ein Nichts gibt, dann hat ja kein Gott Platz, sonst wärs nicht Nichts.”
Die Treppe mit den unendlich vielen Stufen war der Ausgangsgedanke der Diskussion. Und für mich wurde sie nun zur passenden Metapher für das Ende dieses Textes. Je kleiner die Stufen werden, desto näher kommt die gezackte Linie einer geraden Linie. Vielleicht funktioniert Wissen genau so. Vielleicht funktioniert Elternsein auch so. Man übergibt einem Kind das Universum nicht als Ganzes. Man zeichnet eine Stufe, dann die nächste.
Ich weiss nicht, woran er sich erinnern wird: an die Formeln, die verschonte Katze, das unentschiedene Photon, die Fragen über Moral und Ethik oder an die Frage, was vor dem Anfang war.
Vielleicht erinnert er sich einfach an das Gefühl, dass keine Frage zu gross für den Tisch war und dass gemeinsames Denken eine der Arten ist, wie Liebe sichtbar werden kann.
After the Pasta, We Savored the Universe
How a Cat in a Box Led Us to Ask What Kind of Reality God Would Belong To
We had eaten seven forkfuls more pasta than was reasonable. The carbohydrates had pinned both of us to the table, so there was no escape: my son loudly protested that Schrödinger had used cats for his experiments. The sheer verbal force of his disgust sent the last traces of sugo all’arrabbiata spraying from the corners of his mouth.
For me, there are few things more heartwarming than sitting at the family table with my thirteen-year-old son and discussing quantum mechanics. Or flying squirrels as a biological alternative to text messages. But that sketch is on another piece of paper.
Now, shortly before dinner, we had been talking about the uncertainty of school grades as a way of measuring intellectual performance. He said: “if the question is badly asked, the answer cannot really become any better either!”
As the arguments multiplied and tangled around each other, I reached for a scrap of paper lying on the table. Not to organize the conversation. More to keep us from being thrown out of the turn, with nothing but a piece of paper and a handful of questions. And to keep encouraging my son not only to say his thoughts, but to sketch them.
So we sketched out, roughly enough, the Euclidean geometry problem we had begun with. And the fact that a staircase with infinitely many steps may resemble a hypotenuse, but its length will never become identical to it. Already, everything was on the table: measuring, nearing, falling short, reality.
Before we could finish the topic, hunger had become too strong — so we moved on to cooking. I have already told you about the seven forkfuls too many.
By then, the question generator in my boy’s mind had fuel again, and the uncertainty of school grades seemed to lead him directly to questions about Mr. Schrödinger’s moral standing in the matter of his cat experiment. So we clarified — as far as I was capable of clarifying anything at all — the allegedly scandalous experiment had only ever been a thought experiment in quantum mechanics. No cat had died in a box by way of a quantum-triggered poison device. That helped de-escalate things a little.
And once ethics and morality are floating above the empty plates, the next question is never far behind. With my boy, and his fierce sense of justice, it was only one cat-sized leap before the question began to glow in the room: “Who decides what good morality is?”
Fortunately, this is not the kind of question a father is required to answer. I doubt I would have received a good grade, even with my effort plainly showing. But I could offer two questions:
Who gets to lay down the rules of morality?
And what makes a moral rule truly right?
Several fierce scribbles later, we had reached something like agreement: morality does not become true just because someone declares it so. The deeper question is why anything can be called good, just, or wrong in the first place.
I could almost feel the next cluster of questions bubbling up inside my son: “Why can any god define the right morality? Maybe other gods disagree!”
The scrap of paper is crowded with detours, half-drawn boxes, and small worlds barely begun. Here, I am only trying to follow a few of the traces still clear enough to read.
My son protested: “If God is all-knowing and good, then the question remains: where is the goodness, where is the kindness, in a newborn’s brain tumor? And don’t tell me the ways of God are beyond understanding. Otherwise I’ll use that line on my teacher in the next test.”
Things became especially interesting when the adjectives “all-knowing” and “all-powerful” entered the conversation. The question quickly became: “Could an all-powerful God violate the laws of physics? And if so, why don’t those laws apply to everyone?“
“And if he were matter, then he would have had to come from stardust too. Who made the first sun, then?” So we brushed against Einstein’s famous equation, “E = mc².” Mass and energy are inseparably connected, while matter and mass are not simply the same thing. At least not cleanly enough to build a substantial old man with a beard out of them.
And from there it was only a quantum leap to briefly touch on the double-slit experiment as well. Between pasta waves and Parmesan crumbs, wave-particle duality suddenly sat there on the table with us.
My son concluded: “I would have all the results perfectly inside me — if people would just stop observing them from the outside!”
“But,” came the final objection on the matter of energy, “what was really there before the Big Bang?” And, quite rightly, while we were trying to weigh possible answers: “And what exactly is that place where the universe is expanding into? And since when has there been nothing? And if there is a Nothing, then there’s no room for God, otherwise it wouldn’t be Nothing.”
The staircase with infinitely many steps had been the starting idea of our discussion, and for me it now became the right metaphor for the end of this text. The smaller the steps become, the closer the jagged line comes to a straight line. Maybe knowledge works the same way. Maybe parenting does too. You do not place the whole universe in a child’s hands. You draw one step, and then another.
I do not know what he will remember: the formulas, the spared cat, the undecided photon, the questions about morality and ethics, or the question of what came before the beginning. Maybe he will simply remember the feeling that no question was too large for the table, and that thinking together can be one of the ways love learns to become visible.

This conversation here between father and young teenage son is one of the most challenging, unique and fascinating debates I have ever heard. And using the visual of a piece of paper and pencil was brilliant.
With raising four boys and working with the youth for so many years, I have not come across such an ‘old soul’ in a young man’s body, who has the depth to share in a straight forward way his thoughts about life…what is fair and not fair…what is right or wrong, who dares to be in control of these issues, and feeling safe enough to bring it to the table for discussion. It left me wanting to sit with him for hours, just to listen and peer into his eyes to experience the importance of what he was speaking about. Your focus, questions and patience, Roland has given this young teacher the opportunity to speak without hesitation.
Oh, how I would love to see where he will be in 10 years from now. I can only imagine.
