Ikarus and Daedalus

Icarus and Daedalus escape from the labyrinth of the Minotaur…

In the myth of Icarus and Daedalus I discover two dreamers: Daedalus, whose dream of flight across the boundless expanses of the sky made it possible for the two of them to free themselves from captivity with wings in the first place, and Icarus, whose dream of unlimited flight brought him close to the sun and cost him his life. While everyone is talking about the fall of Icarus as a punishment for the lack of humility, what is even more essential in this story, in my eyes, is being suppressed:

Dreaming is our most transformative power. It makes possible everything that seemed impossible before the dream. It is the core of development. If there is a creative power, it must be the purest form of dreaming.

“Stop dreaming and work. Oh you dreamer. Stop dreaming and be realistic.” How many ways we have invented to tame, to tire, to stifle that power.

In the process, we sacrifice to the fear of falling the chance of release from the labyrinth. So that Icarus can never be in danger of falling, we let Daedalus, and with him Icarus, wither away in the prison of realism.

Today is a good day for dreaming. Now is a good moment to dream. The boundless freedom of the sky smiles at us.
